إن عامل البناء هو أحد أفراد طاقم البناء، وهو الذي يقوم بأداء عدد كبير من المهمات الرئيسية التي تحتاج إلى عمل بدني شاق في مواقع البناء، وقد تتمثل تلك المهام في تنظيف الموقع وتجهيزه، بناء السقالات والحواجز والدعامات، وغيرها من اللوازم التي يحتاجونها في العمل، إلى جانب تشغيل خلاطات الخرسانة، المناشير، آلات ثقب الصخور، المثاقب، وغير ذلك.

وفي الغالب ما يعمل عامل البناء في أي موقع من مواقع البناء أيًا كان نوع البناء الذي سوف يتم إنشائه، وتتمثل مجموعة المهام التي يقومون بها من درجات السهل جدًا إلى الصعب للغاية والخطير، وفي حين أن الكثير من  تلك المهام تكون بحاجة إلى قدر قليل من التدريب والخبرة، إلا أن مثلها مثل أغلب الوظائف، إذ جميعها تحتاج بعضًا من المهارة، ولكن من حسن الحظ أنه يمكن اتقانها بسرعة.

ونظرًا إلى أن تلك المهن ة تتطلب وجود مجموعة متنوعة من المهام في كافة مراحل البناء، وبينما أن معظم عمال البناء شاملون، إلا أنه يوجد الكثير منهم يكونون متخصصين في مهمة مُعينة، فمثلًا، العمال الذين يشغلون المعدات والآلات التي تقوم بوضع الخرسانة أو الأسفلت على الطريق يكونون أكثر طلبًا للتخصص في تلك المجالات، ومن تلك التخصصات المهنية يوجد: بناء المنازل والشركات، هدم المباني، حفر الأنفاق وفتحات المناجم، إزالة المواد الخطرة، بناء الطرق والطرق السريعة.

أما عن الأدوات التي يستخدمها عمال البناء فهي مجموعة متباينة من الأدوات والمعدات، وبعض من الأدوات البسيطة كالمكانس والمجارف، أما المعدات الأكثر تطورًا فتكون مثل قواطع الرصيف، مكابس الأرض، آلات ثقب الصخور، ومعدات المسح.

وقد نجد أنهم يقومون بحمل أحمال البناء الثقيلة مثل الرمال، الحديد، الأسمنت وغيرها،  بالإضافة إلى أنهم في الغالب ما يضطرون إلى التواء أجسادهم ليتمكنون من الوصول إلى المناطق التي يكون من الصعب الوصول إليها.  

ولكن لا تقتصر مهنة عامل البناء على هذا فقط، إذ أن البعض منهم يفعلون بعض الأعمال الصغيرة أيضًا، مثل التحكم في حركات المرور التي تكون قريبة من مناطق البناء، داخلها أو حولها، وقد ينظفون مواقع البناء من اجل التخلص من المخاطر المحتملة فيه، وفي جميع الأحوال يبقى عملهم شاق، ويستحق كل التقدير.
